Lannan Foundation 2017-2018 Schedule of Speakers – finally not anti-Israel

The Lannan Foundation just announced its line-up for speakers and moderators for the 2017-2018 season.  While in prior years they have always had an anti-Semitic speaker ranting against Israel (and often the US – see our documentation of these speakers here), there are no speakers we could identify for the 2017-2018 season who take that position as the main reason for their public speaking.

While it is possible that one or another of their literary or political speakers may make disparaging, off-hand remarks about Israel, usually in reference to the academically suspect concept of “intersectionality,” there is only one speaker who may be of concern:  Glenn Greenwald and/or his moderator, Tom Engelhardt, who has published anti-Zionist writers such as Noam Chomsky.  At the same time, Engelhardt has also published Maus about the Holocaust.

The topic of Greenwald’s talk seems to be far from the Middle East, so we would hope that the conversation doesn’t stray in the direction of Israel.  The Greenwald/Engelhardt talk is on September 27 at 7:00 pm at the Lensic.  We’d recommend you attend and report back to us (info@sfmew.org) with any concerns.

Attend the Jewish Federation of New Mexico’s (JFNM’s) 70th Anniversary celebration on September 10th.  More information can be found here.  SFMEW is a beneficiary of the JFNM.

Be sure to attend our next membership meeting, Monday, September 18, 7:15 pm, at Marcia Torobin’s house.  RSVP to info@sfmew.org and we’ll send directions.
